what are the purple ones in the bottom picture? we have some floating around the property (previous owners) but I haven't figured out what they are yet.

Echinacea, aka Purple coneflower. It's a great prairie plant: tolerates drought, loves the sun, feeds the bees and butterflies. They're easy to divide and spread all around your yard and flower for a really long time. Leave the flower stalks standing into winter and they look interesting in snow. Also, birds eat the seeds and the ones that fall start more plants.

The picture in the middle is the same thing, but looks different in B&W.

Those are wonderful, Elizabeth. I'm inspired; I'll take some pictures of my hollyhocks - there are some blossoms undefiled by the japanese beetles now! Seems I've had some success with my Shimmering Blue Cylinder of Beetle Death....
